GSF unlocks the learning potential of school gardens with our Seed-to-Table curriculum. This unique standards-based educational platform takes classroom learning and turns it into an interactive and hands on experience, incorporating science, math, and English language arts with cooking and gardening classes. Lessons are carefully constructed to make learning interactive, fun and memorable while instilling healthy eating habits and fostering a connection with nature.

GSF school gardens provide a living laboratory where children can play, learn and explore, but they also serve as a community center where families, teachers and community partners can meet and collaborate. The Garden School foundation’s mission is always to bring the community together, through after school activities, workday events, festivals, workshops and more.

The Garden School Foundation (GSF) is always looking for passionate interns to join our mission! The ideal candidate has a desire to gain experience in garden education and urban agriculture, a passion for advocacy and community engagement and loves to get their hands dirty with the rewarding garden work that keeps our living laboratories beautiful.

As a Garden School Foundation intern you will have the chance to:

  • Gain hands-on experience in providing garden-based education to underserved youth through our Seed-to-Table program.
  • Learn about organic gardening in an urban setting which includes: fruit tree care, integrated pest management practices, seed starting, plant propagation, crop rotating and of course, various composting techniques.
  • Meet and work with leaders in the Southern California urban agriculture and the garden-based education movements.
  • Work closely with a diverse group of adults and children in an outdoor, garden setting

As an intern, your responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting Garden Coordinators during cooking and gardening classes to provide our students with the best in garden-based education.
  • Working closely with our garden staff to complete garden projects that enhance learning opportunities.
  • Assisting in the care of our beautiful and functional garden classrooms, greenhouse and themed garden spaces.
  • Potentially designing and completing a project of your choosing whether that’s running an after-school art club or planting in a freshly built hugelkulture.
  • For interested candidates: writing blog posts about your experiences in the garden or with the students as a way to chronicle your time and share what you’re passionate about with our social media community.

An ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Experience with children in an educational setting.
  • A strong desire to gain experience in organic gardening/agriculture.
  • A strong interest in food, gardening, education, and community building.
  • The ability to take initiative and work well independently, and also as part of a team.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive, can-do attitude and willingness to work outside.
  • Be comfortable working with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Spanish language skills preferred.

Interns will work 2 days a week from 8am to 3:00pm (depending on site schedule) plus one Saturday per month from 8:00am to 3:00 pm. Internships are unpaid; however, we are happy to arrange academic credit with your school or university in exchange for your work with GSF.

Joni Ito Master Gardener ~ This is very exciting opportunity and I am highly interested in joining your organization. My experience, qualifications and unique skill set make me an excellent fit for the Garden School Foundation 24th Street Garden Coordinator position that your organization is currently seeking to fill. I will be submitting my resume with cover letter in application for the position to Shelby Crowell as specified in the advertisement. I would truly appreciate the opportunity to discuss in detail my qualifications at a mutually convenient time with whoever conducts the interview. I look forward to that conversation soon.
